EW TV Review: "Mad Men"

Speaking of adjustments, oily Pete Campbell is still the most conflicted of all. He tries to do good, but often can't resist taking the easy, morally-questionable path. Played to perfection by Vincent Kartheiser, Pete gave us this season's most memorable scene so far when he went into Don's office after learning his father had died in a plane crash. Instead of simply breaking down and weeping, Pete was befuddled at how he was supposed to be reacting. It was awkwardly priceless.

While I was browsing AMC's website searching for a more complete episode guide of Mad Men, I found a brand new Vincent Kartheiser Q&A instead :-) I didn't find a complete guide so far, but at TV.com they knew at least some more episode titles :-) I will never understand why AMC doesn't list them in time by themselves...

Q&A - Vincent Kartheiser (Pete Campbell)

In this exclusive interview with AMCtv.com, Vincent Kartheiser discusses his character Pete Campbell, not to mention the actors portraying him in the "You Could Be on Mad Men Contest."

Q: Episode 2 has Pete coping with the death of his father -- and you coping with the death of Christopher Allport, the late actor who played him. What was that like?

A: Christopher Allport was really great. We only had one scene with him last year, but it was a great scene. And I think the way Matthew [Weiner] handled it in the show is amazing because he doesn't play to that obvious reaction. The death of someone so pivotal in your life really creates a self-analysis...I think the bigger question about the episode is "How are we supposed to respond in certain situations? What am I supposed to be doing now that this thing has hit?" This is a very small and bad analogy, but I just had a flood at my house, and I looked at my house full of mud and I was like, "What am I supposed to do?" I knew there was something I should be doing in this situation, and I think emotionally that's what Pete's going through. I'm just thankful that my parents will live forever, because that's just how it's going to happen, okay?

Q: Do you think this development makes Pete more sympathetic?

A: I think people should be able to empathize with him on a certain level. It's hard for me to think too much about whether the viewing audience is going to sympathize or not with Pete, because this is a character that I've now been with for three years. I think there's a certain amount of people who still won't like him. And I think there are people in the world that when I hear bad things have happened to them, I won't sympathize or empathize. Some people have it coming.

Q: What's the hardest part about playing Pete?

A: The most difficult part sometimes is that people are constantly shunning him and locking him out of conversations. He gets humbled several times in the first season, and I think it's a strong character trait of his that he can take that and continue to bully his way into the next thing. But it's such a blessing to have a character like this. The words just jump off the page and the characters fall in line and very rarely or ever do you see someone going, "What am I doing this for?"

Q: Have you been paying attention to the videos of fans saying your monologue for AMCtv.com's contest to win a role on Mad Men?

A: Yeah I have. I feel anger towards all of them that they're trying to one-up me. [Laughs] I don't get it. Why don't you guys just go do Jon Hamm. Come on! Who wants to be Pete Campbell anyways? I mean, I do. But I didn't think there was any other freak out there who wanted to be Pete.

The future is now for AMC's 'Mad Men'

By Bill Keveney, USA TODAY

The ad men at the heart of Mad Men would have an easy time promoting the second season of the Golden Globe-winning drama: a mix of the familiar with a twist — a small hop forward in time.

As the AMC period piece ended Season 1 shortly after the 1960 presidential election, hotshot ad exec Don Draper (Jon Hamm) found himself home all alone for Thanksgiving. Times weren't any better for some of his Sterling Cooper colleagues, with one recovering from a heart attack, another on the outs with his wife, and a third in anguish after bearing a son from a hidden pregnancy.

When Mad Men returns for a 13-episode run, the heavy-smoking, hard-drinking New Yorkers will find themselves at a point in the not-too-distant future. Creator Matthew Weiner won't say exactly when, other than it won't be long enough for the characters to escape their pasts.

"The world has changed a little bit, but the stories will involve two things: One is that you have to live with the consequences of your actions, and (the other is) people don't change," he says. Viewers "will be seeing their old friends, but they will have new problems."

That's definitely the case with the dapper Draper. As with many of the products he sells, he isn't not what he appears to be beneath the shiny surface. He traded identities with a slain fellow soldier in the Korean War and reinvented his life.

"A theme in our show is, what's the truth behind the image? What's the man behind the myth?" says Hamm, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the complicated Draper. "We just found out basically at the end of the first season who Don really was. There's a whole empty period of time between the Korean War and Don coming home and Don moving to New York and Don getting a job in advertising."

One second-season answer Weiner will give is that all the main characters are back, including agency partner Roger Sterling (John Slattery), who suffered a heart attack late in the first season.

"Duck (Mark Moses) is now head of accounts. Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) is in accounts limbo and Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) is a junior copywriter. Don is still partner and creative director," says Weiner, who wrote for The Sopranos. The company has undergone some change: "You'll feel that right away from the first episode. You will know that something different has happened."

Family dynamics change, too. Don's wife, Betty (January Jones), overcame her denial about his infidelity late in the first season and that has an effect on their relationship. Betty "is such an interesting person and so not who we thought she was," Weiner says.

He says viewers will see subtle changes to mark the passage of time, including more hints that an era often portrayed as placid was not. Appearances will still deceive, Hamm says: "Through a veil of nostalgia, everybody looks so put together, so beautiful. They were so cool and just so. In reality, a lot of them were fairly miserable."

Edit: Remember my post about the LAT's Envelope Primetime Screening? I just checked the official site to find out, that the Mad Men Q&A is full! Lets's hope, that we'll find some nice pictures and quotes afterwards :-)))

I managed to capture the video clip from Entertainment Weekly's Mad Men - Behind the scenes of season 2. I only could grab 30 fps, which lead to a slight quality loss regarding the state of being synchronous. But that's the best I can do with my tools, so I hope you can enjoy it nevertheless :-) The size of the clip is almost 70Mb, you need a player capable of playing quick time files. Klick at the image or the link to download:

EW Cover Summer TV Preview: Cover Story

Mad Men: Inside Summer TV's No. 1 Hidden Gem

The gorgeous Golden Globe-winning drama returns for another season armed with accolades and a big-budget marketing campaign. But can the cult hit sell itself to new viewers?
By Missy Schwartz

The workday has begun at the Sterling Cooper advertising agency, yet the offices are unusually quiet. It's early May on the downtown Los Angeles soundstage that houses the Mad Men sets, and right now there are no clattering typewriters, ringing phones, or hushed voices sharing juicy gossip. Save for lighter moments in between takes — like when actor Jon Hamm grins naughtily as he tosses his fedora across the room at show creator Matthew Weiner, and misses — the atmosphere is dead serious. As cameras begin rolling, a dozen or so Sterling Cooper employees, including the ambitious junior exec Pete Campbell (
Vincent Kartheiser), are huddled around a secretary's desk, hanging on to every word coming from her transistor radio. They listen to the breaking news: A plane departing from New York's Idlewild Airport has crashed in Long Island. Nearly a hundred people are dead. When bosses Don Draper (Hamm) and Roger Sterling (John Slattery) join the stunned staffers, Don immediately orders his team to halt production on their new campaign for Mohawk Airlines. ''The rest of you,'' he commands, all stern composure, ''stop crying and figure out how we're going to hit the ground running in three weeks with new work.'

My 3rd entry today :-) AMC just updated their blog with the following news on the schedule of 2nd season of Vincent's Mad Men and the possibility to pre-order the 2009 Mad Men calender :-)

Season Two Premiere Is Officially Announced by AMC

Need a fix of Don Draper? Want to know how (or if) Peggy is dealing with motherhood? AMC officially announces the premiere of Mad Men Season Two: Sunday, July 27 @ 8PM | 7C. To get you ready for the second season, AMC will have a Mad Men marathon of all 13 episodes of Season One on Sunday, July 20 starting at 12PM | 11C.

Want to do your homework even sooner? The first season of the series will be released on DVD July 1 and is available for pre-order for $10 off the retail price in the AMC Store. Fans can also look forward to the release of the compact disc Mad Men: Music from the Series, Vol. 1 on June 24 and a 2009 calendar soon thereafter.

Sounds good to me, just a couple of weeks to wait :-D

This is the second post I have to make today: I found this article about Vincent's Mad Men at "The Envelop" @ Los Angeles Times. It doesn't have any actual news in it, more some general comments on the quality of the show:

Und noch ein Eintrag heute: soeben habe ich einen Artikel in der Los Angeles Times entdeckt, in dem ein kurzer Überblick über Vincent's Mad Men und ein paar Bemerkungen über die Qualität fallen gelassen werden:

Petra
According to AMC "...Mad Men has officially moved from the planning stage into reality this week with the beginning of production in Los Angeles. The series which will be broadcast in both high definition and standard definition will make its bow this July. While series creator Matthew Weiner has been customarily coy about divulging potential plots points for the upcoming season, he has revealed that John Slattery will be returning to the show as Roger Sterling..."

I'm really curios about that, because Vincent told us, that he will have a new boss in the next season, what wasn't actually surprising, considering what happened in Episode 13. So will RS appear as an adviser? He still owes the place as much as Cooper does, so he might show up once in a while in and gave the new boss and everybody else but Don a hard time? Could be interesting :-)))

It seems that we'll have a second season of Vincent Kartheisers Mad Men :-)

On the E!Online website you find the following news: "Breaking! Mad Men Picked Up for Season 2 Just heard from reliable sources that AMC's Mad Men will be coming back for a second season. Hurrah! I can tell you that as of Sunday night, not even the cast knew of the show's fate (I ran into a couple of castmembers at the HBO soiree), but they said they've loved being a part of the series and were crossing their fingers it would return. Ditto for us fans! If you're happy, holler in the Comments below! Mad Men airs Thursday nights on AMC."

Lets hope the best :-)
